MACCHIAIOLI EXHIBITION IN TURIN: 3 FEBRUARY – 1 APRIL 2024

At the Mastio della Cittadella in Turin, the spotlight is about to be turned on ‘I Macchiaioli e la pittura en plein air tra Francia e Italia’ (The Macchiaioli and en plein air painting between France and Italy), the exhibition that traces the vicissitudes of more than 80 works by famous artists such as Giovanni Fattori and Telemaco Signorini.

HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MACCHIAIOLI

The Macchiaioli were a group of painters who distinguished themselves for their innovative technique based on spot colour, which created effects of light and contrast. Their subjects were inspired by everyday life, landscape, the Risorgimento and modernity. The Macchiaioli were influenced by French painting, in particular the Barbizon School and the Impressionists, but were also able to express a strong originality and national identity. Among the main exponents of the movement were Giovanni Fattori, Telemaco Signorini, Silvestro Lega, Giuseppe Abbati and Raffaello Sernesi.

“MACCHIAIOLI AND EN PLEIN AIR PAINTING BETWEEN FRANCE AND ITALY”

The exhibition in Turin proposes an itinerary that traces the history and evolution of the Macchiaioli, putting them in dialogue with the works of other European artists who shared the same pictorial research. The exhibition is divided into seven thematic sections, illustrating the different phases and facets of the movement, from its birth in Florence in 1855, to its relations with France, the Academy and Purism, experimentation, the Risorgimento, maturity and the legacy of the Macchiaioli.

If you are passionate about art and history, this exhibition could be an unmissable opportunity to admire the works of the Macchiaioli and discover their role in 19th-century Italian painting.
